What Is Lakme Fashion
Week?
Lakme Fashion Week is India’s most prestigious fashion
show that takes place bi-annually, with the summer/resort show in February and
the fall/winter show in August. Being run through a collaborative effort
between cosmetic brand Lakmé and IMG Reliance Ltd, the fashion show was
conceived to allow Indian fashion to gain a foothold in the global fashion
scene.
How Did The Lakme Fashion
Week Emerge?
LFW began as Lakmé India Fashion Week (LIFW) in 1999 through
a partnership between the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and IMG. Its
first event took place in 1999 with International Model Naomi Campbell. LFW has
been instrumental in making the careers of various current top designers and
celebrities. The runway serves as a great way for Bollywood's newcomers to make
their debut. Lakmé was the main sponsor for the show that was held in Delhi up
to 2005. The designers for the first show included Monisha Jaising, Ritu Kumar,
Rohit Bal, Tarun Tahiliani and others. After Lakmé’s contract with FDCI could
not be renewed, there was a split, and LFW moved to Mumbai in 2006 while India
Fashion Week continued in Delhi.
What Is The Ideology
Behind Lakme Fashion Week?
Lakmé Fashion Week has been conceived and created with a
vision to "Redefine the future of fashion and integrate India into the
global fashion world." Indian designers are no longer confined to
the domestic fashion and apparel market, they are gaining recognition and fame
worldwide. One of the breakthroughs provided to Indian designers to showcase
their talents is through the medium of fashion shows. Lakme Fashion Week is the
most popular in the world of Indian
fashion where the talents of already established and upcoming designers are
